Affirmative Action Thoughts

Affirmative action (particularly when based on race) has been a topic that I have thought about for a very long time. On one hand, I understand that there are certain groups (most predominantly Hispanics and Blacks) that have significant disadvantages in the college admissions process compared to others. Many do not have resources to "game" college admission, and most may not be able to attend a school that would lend itself as competitive in the process. In this sense, I understand and agree that affirmative action in some sense is a good thing. Colleges, workplaces, and more can all benefit greatly from a diverse student body not only in terms of race and gender, but also socioeconomic status and personality. However, I am reluctant to support affirmative action in the sense that it seems to often put certain groups (most notably Asians) at a disadvantage. Fierce proponents of affirmative action justify it as a way to help historically discriminated groups, but Asians were also historically discriminated as well. However, I also recognize that as the so-called "model minority," Asians are not struggling as much as their other fellow minorities. Thus, I can come to no clear-cut and defined answer, but at the very least I can try to understand both sides.
