Dear Pinky,
I truly appreciate your decision of staying here, even if it’s just because of your grandma. You’ve been despised, ignored, or even mistreated since you carry a black identity. As a result, you passed as white, and began to live a seemingly comfortable life. Nonetheless, I know that you never stop struggling inside you, nor completely gave up your true identity. This trait is exactly the reason I like you. Pinky, I am tired of seeing white phonies feeling extraordinarily good about themselves, as if they are the centres of our country. However you are not like them. You know how the black people are suffering while those whites are showing off their social status. You’ve always been seeking for respects from others, but if you really put a thought in it, is passing the best way to achieve them? The answer is no. It will, however, assure you to receive disdainful looks from your grandma and other old friends. On the other hand, being an educated graduate black nurse is what you should feel proud of, as you are thus able to pioneer for your people. Indeed, the point of education is not encouraging you to sever your bond with groups that are more fragile in the society, but instead leading and perhaps changing them. It is, however, ultimately your decision. I just want to say that it is nice to have you as my nurse and accompany the very last part of my life.
Sincerely,
Ms Em
