In Russell Hochschild's research, explicated in the book "Strangers in their Own Land," it was discovered that southern citizens felt "cheated". "Their" America was once defined by the hard labor of workers or a meritocracy, but now America feels like a cheated system. Their anger is particularly targeted at Obama given the recent push to help support "women, immigrants, refugees, and public-sector workers". However, African Americans, women, immigrants, refugees, etc. have been explicitly discriminated against whether it be racism, sexism, or xenophobia, which pervades our society. In the article "On the Backs of Blacks", Toni Morrison argues that "Whatever the lived experience of immigrants with African Americans - pleasant, beneficial or bruising - the rhetorical experience renders blacks as noncitizens, already discredited outlaws". An African American is discriminated against by birth as societal norms push African Americans to "the lowest level of the racial hierarchy". This is not to discount that middle America has become neglected and somewhat discriminated against. However, this allowed Trump to strategically manipulate this discounted group as he stood to solve the "white male problem of pride." When Trump received 53% of white female votes, it is possible that these females identified more with the identity shared by those in middle America rather than this idea of feminism. Feminism, in the public eye, is closely tied with need to be elite, which is the opposition for white female lower and middle class citizens. As seen in the photo of Angela Peoples, "white" feminism has separated the female community greatly, possibly within the white community.
