simultaneous versus no identity

Philip Deloria's "Playing Indian" offers insight into what it means to be Native, American, and how these two identities interplay to create whole new identities and relationships. I found the concept of "simultaneous identity" and "no identity" very interesting because often, as people of color, we must sacrifice our intersectionality and choose to represent only one aspect of our identity; I think this is especially true when discussing Native and indigenous identities, and perceptions of these identities. Deloria discusses the opposing view of Natives as "noble savages," where they are seen as the physical manifestation of freedom and truth, yet are considered to be crude and uncivilized. I believe this view is perpetuated even in present times, as Natives are either portrayed as violent warmongers or used to represent some sort of "deep" spirituality. By representing Natives in this extremely stereotypical and antiquated way, we are minimizing the identity and experiences of both Native and Non-Native Americans. "Simultaneous identity" versus "no identity" is dependent on how we choose to represent and interact with these identities and how we translate experiences into action.
