The ambivalence in the population of McAllen, Texas towards local immigration detention centers, while at first seemingly inhumane, is actually a logical psychological reaction. Speaking from personal experience, this being that my hometown Laredo, Texas is 2 hours away from McAllen and also has a lofty border patrol presence, it is natural to want to emotionally detach yourself from the horrors of these detention centers. My mother who is a special education teacher at a local public elementary school often recounts the time that an ICE officer showed up to her class and attempted to retrieve a student whose mother had been detained and deported back to Mexico within a few hours. The student showed up to class the next day and innocently said, "My mom came home really late last night and was soaking wet!" While my mom usually tells this story in a lighthearted, almost humorous, manner, it is just a glimpse into life and hardships of an immigrant in America. This mother risked her life and freedom to swim across the Rio Grande, the border between Laredo and Mexico, to return to her child and to be able to provide the best education for him. While Trump would like to perpetuate an image of dirty, lazy Mexicans wanting to mooch off of the United States government, in actuality, these people are just trying to better their's and their family's lives. The resources available here for special needs children is invaluable compared to those in Mexico and many south american countries, so she did what she needed to do. If this mother thought it possible to stay in Mexico, in the city that
was their home, I can guarantee you she would, but her child made all
the difference.
