The movie Saving Face offered a unique look at what it means to be queer and a person of color. Even though there has been much more queer representation in the media in recent times, queer poc representation is almost nonexistent. This lack of representation and familiarity of queer pocs undoubtedly has influenced the hesitation for people of color to accept queerness in their own people; Saving Face was a prime example of this phenomenon. I think the resistance to queer acceptance in poc communities also stems from not wanting to be any more different from the "typical" american (i.e. straight, white, cisgender) than they already are. why sign up to have yet another facet of your identity ostracized? Saving Face explored the intersection of asian american identity and queer identity--a position that is both underrepresented as a whole and often misrepresented in separate sectors.
