To Wil, From Ma

Dear Wil,

Growing up, I’ve always had to follow strict rules. Although I did not love your father, I married him because your grandpa approved of him. When you told me that you were gay, I knew it was considered unacceptable under traditional values, and so I didn’t give you my support. I know that I haven’t loved you for who you truly are, and that you resent me for ignoring the reality of your sexuality.

But when you stood up at the wedding and encouraged me to be with Yu, I realized that you support me even though I want to be with a much younger man. I am sorry that it took so long to tell you that I love you no matter who you are. Vivian is an amazing girl, and I hope that you will find love and happiness by being with her.

Love,
Ma
