In recent years, immigration has been a hot topic of discussion in the realm of politics and American society in general. People are increasingly concerned about the high percentage of undocumented individuals who have come here from foreign lands, in search of better lives. America’s current president, Donald Trump, has capitalized on Americans’ insecurities since his campaign for the presidency. His stance on the issue revealed not only his own xenophobic ways, but also those of many government personnel and American citizens. It has gotten to the point where children are locked in cages and traumatized by their experience in detention centers. Although this inhumane practice does not reflect the way human beings deserve to be treated, many term undocumented people, “illegal aliens.” This is meant to dehumanize and to validate the harsh treatment of innocent children. If they are not thought of as actual human beings with emotions, feelings, dreams and hopes, it becomes easier for ignorant Americans to continuously turn a blind eye. These oblivious Americans fail to realize, however, is that the willingness of undocumented immigrants to come to the United States under those circumstances reflects how America must be doing something right. If anything, Americans should take pride in the fact that someone would be willing to leave their livelihood behind and pursue a life in a country they have never known. In addition, America is essentially a country established and declared independent by immigrants from another land; so what makes the descendants of these immigrants truly believe they have the right to tell someone else they are not allowed to live in a country they stole in the first place?
