Dear Ms. Simone,
Your music has had a salient impact on the Civil Rights Movement, inspiring many to take action. You are not only a talented musician, but one who uses artistic talent and expertise to fight for a worthy cause. I admire the confidence you have in singing what others are afraid to say, as seen in your brilliant song, “Mississippi Goddam.”
However, I would like to know: Do you regret sacrificing the success of your personal career for your controversial songs? If you could start over, would you still choose to use your music to send political messages? Would you follow your childhood dreams of being a classical pianist instead of switching over to jazz?
Sincerely,
C
